Recordare
Recordare, Jesu pie,
quod sum causa tuae viae;
ne me perdas illa die.
Quaerens me, sedisti lassus,
redemisti crucem passus;
tantus labor non sit cassus.
Juste judex ultionis,
donum fac remissionis
ante diem rationis.
Ingemisco, tamquam reus:
culpa rubet vultus meus;
supplicanti parce, Deus.
Qui Mariam absolvisti,
et latronem exaudisti,
mihi quoque spem dedisti.
Preces meae non sunt dignae,
sed tu, bonus, fac benigne,
ne perenni cremer igne.
Inter oves locum praesta,
Et ab haedis me sequestra,
Statuens in parte dextra.
Translation
Remember, kind Jesus,
my salvation caused your suffering;
do not forsake me on that day.
Faint and weary you have sought me,
redeemed me, suffering on the cross;
may such great effort not be in vain.
Righteous judge of vengeance,
grant me the gift of absolution
before the day of retribution.
I moan as one who is guilty:
owning my shame with a red face;
suppliant before you, Lord.
You, who absolved Mary,
and listened to the thief,
give me hope also.
My prayers are unworthy,
but, good Lord, have mercy,
and rescue me from eternal fire.
Provide me a place among the sheep,
and separate me from the goats,
guiding me to Your right hand.
Chi mi frena in tal momento, from Lucia di Lammermoor, by Donizetti

Edgardo
(Chi mi frena in tal momento?…
Chi troncò dell’ire il corso?
Il suo duolo, il suo spavento
Son la prova d’un rimorso!…
Ma, qual rosa inaridita,
Ella sta fra morte e vita!…
Io son vinto… son commosso…
T’amo, ingrata, t’amo ancor! )
Enrico
(Chi trattiene il mio furore,
E la man che al brando corse?
Della misera in favore
Nel mio petto un grido sorse!
È il mio sangue! io l’ho tradita!
Ella sta fra morte e vita!…
Ah! che spegnere non posso
Un rimorso nel mio cor!)
.
Lucia
(Io sperai che a me la vita
Tronca avesse il mio spavento…
Ma la morte non m’aita…
Vivo ancor per mio tormento! —
Da’ miei lumi cadde il velo…
Mi tradì la terra e il cielo!…
Vorrei pianger, ma non posso…
Ah, mi manca il pianto ancor! )
Arturo, Raimondo, Alisa, Chorus
(Qual terribile momento!…
Più formar non so parole!…
Densa nube di spavento
Par che copra i rai del sole! —
Come rosa inaridita
Ella sta fra morte e vita!…
Chi per lei non è commosso
Ha di tigre in petto il cor.)
Edgar
(Who restrains me in such a moment?
Who cut short the course of my anger?
Her grief, her terror
are proof of remorse!
But, like a wilting rose
she stands between life and death.
I am overcome . . . I am moved . . .
I love you, ungrateful woman, I love you still!)
Henry
(Who holds back my fury
and the hand which leapt to my sword?
In the unhappy girl’s behalf
a cry rose in my heart!
She is my blood! I have betrayed her!
She stands between life and death.
Alas, that I cannot quench
the remorse in my heart!)
Lucy
(I hoped that my terror
would have ended my life . . .
But death does not help me;
I still live, for my torment!
The veil has fallen from my eyes:
Heaven and earth have betrayed me!
I would weep, but I cannot . . .
Even tears fail me!)
Arthur, Raimondo, Alisa, Chorus
(What a terrible moment!
I can no longer utter a word.
A thick cloud of terror
seems to cover the sun’s rays!
Like a wilting rose
she stands between life and death!
Whoever is not moved for her
has a tiger’s heart in his breast.)
